About Libby

Welcome to my website.  

 

I teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), lead drop-in guided mindfulness meditation sessions, teach short practice-focused courses on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and the Brahma Viharas, and provide presentations to organizations

and businesses.

 

I have been practicing mindfulness since 1979 when I went to my first 7-day silent retreat at the Insight Meditation Society. My perspectives on myself and my struggles shifted profoundly and I was better able to deal with difficulties when they arose. As I continued to practice, I experienced more equanimity and wisdom. I have practiced mindfulness ever since that first retreat and continue to practice on my own, in groups, and attend retreats whenever I can.

In 2001, I was offered the opportunity to take a week-long course on teaching MBSR from Jon Kabat-Zinn, who developed this model of learning mindfulness. Since then, I have pursued further advanced teacher training and am now a Certified MBSR Teacher

I started teaching in 2007 to colleagues in the UM Psychiatry Department. In 2010, I offered the course to the broader community, teaching MBSR almost every Fall, Winter, and Spring to a wide variety of individuals.

 

I will now be teaching MBSR only in the fall, but I will offer short courses in winter and spring on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and on the  Brahma Vijaras (kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity).  Details on those classes will be forthcoming as plans are finalized.

Teaching mindfulness is the most rewarding thing I've ever done. I learn so much from every class. Teaching reinforces my own practice, and I enjoy sharing the practice of cultivating gentle compassionate awareness of

the present moment, just as it is, and as best we can.

The Fall 2024 class in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction will be held on Saturday afternoons, starting Sept. 21 with a free Introductory session, followed by the 8-week class and retreat, from Sept. 28 to Nov. 23.  It will be offered virtually, but I'm investigating using hybrid options to allow inperson participation as well.  

My Fall 2024 MBSR class will begin with a free Introduction to Mindfulness and to MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). This class will be on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 2:00-4:30. It will cover basic principles of mindfulness and provide opportunities to practice several methods of cultivating mindfulness, In addition, I'll describe briefly the 8-week MBSR class . My teaching style is fairly informal, with lots of opportunities for discussion, interactions, and questions.

The 8-week course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) begins the following Saturday, Sept. 28 and concludes Nov. 23,  with a 4-hr retreat on Nov. 9, 12-4 pm.

 

At this time, all classes and the retreat will be virtual, although I'm investigating hybrid options, so some can participate in-person.

 

The extensive research on MBSR has found that fully participating in the class is associated with decreases in depression, anxiety, pain, and stress, and improved coping with difficult aspects of life. The class will review some of this vast body of research. 

 

The free Introductory session requires registration (see below), so I can send you the zoom link. As mentioned above, the Introductory session will be on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 2:00-4:30, Eastern Time. Please register with me (see below) and I'll send you the Zoom link.

The Fall 8-week MBSR class will be held on Saturdays from Sept. 28 to Nov. 23, from 2:00 to 4:30, Eastern Time. It includes a 4-hour retreat on Saturday, Nov. 9, noon to 4 pm.

The course fee is $300 (scholarships & payment plans available).

 

20 Social Work Continuing Education credits are available for an additional $100 fee; if needed, let me know as soon as you can..

I have been teaching Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction since 2007, have taught over 60 MBSR classes, and am a Certified MBSR teacher from the UC-San Diego Center for Mindfulness. I have also received teacher trainings from the Univ. Mass Center for Mindfulness and the Toronto Centre for Mindfulness Studies.

If you want to register for the 8-week class, you'll need to fill out a Registration Form, which I will email to you, and pay a deposit of $75 (refundable if you decide not to take the class). The deposit holds your spot in the class. The full fee is $300. Note: Fees and payment schedules are negotiable.

I will update this website as I create a flyer and decide about offering the class in a hybrid format (both virtual and in-person).
